“TRIPLEX” Approach Adds New Dimensions

Jan Wright’s “Triplex” painting process in watermedia is not an original technique but one that she’s used to expand her repertoire to obtain award-winning results. Using 140 lb hot-press paper, she applies a high-key, multi-toned watercolor wash (to provide a background for the painting), adds a second coat of matte medium mixed with water (to create a moisture barrier between the first and second layer) and then adds the top layer—a thick coat of watercolor paint that may be textured and either lifted off or painted back into after it dries. The results are unusual and provide endless possibilities for creative expression.

 Supplies Needed

• TWO or three sheets of 140 lb HOT PRESS paper, preferably Arches (Michael’s or Aaron Bros. may have it. Also, Dick Blick (formerly Art Store) in Pasadena or, if time permits, order from a catalog—it’s cheaper.) I’ll have a few extra sheets but not enough to supply everyone

• Watercolor paint in TUBES. Paint that’s been squeezed into a palette and dried won’t work.

• Matte medium. (I’ll bring a jar and share since it only takes a small amount. Don’t buy any if you don’t already have it.)

• Old 2” brush or cheap brush from home improvement store for matte medium

• Watercolor brushes. At least one 2” brush, even if it’s a home improvement store variety.

• Masking tape. Wider is better.
• Roll of cheap (think 99 Cents Store) plastic wrap

• TWO water containers

• Plastic table cloth

• Paper towels, tissues

• OPTIONAL – art stamps, texture-making implements to enhance third coat of paint

Bring a lunch to eat with the class!
